The Subway Chronicles: Part 1 First, Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who celebrates it! Now, on to the New York City subway. Don’t get me started. I love it. A labyrinthine network of tunnels and tracks that runs beneath the bustling streets (and above them, here and there) is more than just a mode of transportation; it's a vibrant tapestry of life, culture, and energy. My love for the subway is rooted in its diverstiy and dynamism.
Great piece - and wonderful photography Alex. I feel you totally - I love the Subway ( even though i've only ever visited NYC twice! ) I spent over 20 years using the London Underground and have used many others, Madrid, Rome, Naples, Paris ... I think you just see what a City is and who it's people really are when you use an underground/subway/metro, you feel a part of it, you feel that however much the local moan and complain about it, they secretly love it and are proud of it ... everytime I go back to London I have a big smile on my face when I use the tube ... and my camera in my hand lol!
Thanks so much, Richard. Agree with you a hundred percent. The subway / tube is the face of the city. And I love your photos as well. Always look forward to your words and images!
When I was in New York this past May, I was too nervous to take photos of people on the subway. I’m excited to read your pieces about the ethics of street photography! It’s something I thought (and then wrote) about a lot.
I ended up taking pictures of other tourists taking pictures, and I think I found a new favorite subject.
