Framing-the-Story as a new approach to storytelling and photography that combines traditional writing techniques with the unique perspective of incorporating key elements of photography into storytelling (fiction, theater, screenwriting) and vice versa.
As you stroll along the streets, parks, and hidden corners of your city, your eyes become laser-focused on the tiniest details. Suddenly, a mosquito urinating on a fop's hat or a white cat lying atop of a red fire hydrant transforms into a whimsical scene straight out of a silent film or an Eastern-European cartoon. You start to see art in the ordinary and multiple stories in the mundane.
Whether you're a photographer who dreams of translating your images into captivating stories or a writer seeking fresh inspiration through the lens, the Framing-the-Story newsletter is your guide to discovering the magic that happens when these two art forms come together.

Who I Am
I am Alex Kustanovich (aka Kustanographer). I was born in Belarus and have lived in America longer than most of you have been alive. Brooklyn, NY is my home. For now.
I’m a screenwriter and photographer (I also dabble in songwriting and fiction writing, but that’s for another newsletter in another life).
Here are some of my screenplays that have been made into films. I have also written and rewritten many originals and adaptations for producers all over the world (most have never seen the light of day, unfortunately / fortunately).
My photographs have been published here and here. I’ve also taken a few that haven’t been published anywhere except on my site. You can check out my Instagram here.
For many years I’ve taught screenwriting at Brooklyn College (CUNY), and now I’m guiding undergraduates through the gnarly forest of storytelling at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY, and mentoring MFA screenwriting students at the David Lynch Graduate School of Cinematic Arts (online). I also conduct private screenwriting workshops and offer story analysis and mentoring sessions.

I’ve been looking at the world through the lens of a camera ever since I stole one from my father. I started walking around with it as soon as I learned how to hide it in my coat pocket. And I began making up stories when my father caught me making up stories. It’s been a long and mostly pleasant journey. And I’m still here.
Best wishes,
ak
